hirumabot.com

A role-playing game played inside Discord, with its own web application. My biggest project, and the one that taught me to run a project end to end: the code, but also testing, deployment and the team.

DiagramOverview: players go through Discord or the website, and everything converges on the same API.

The project

Hiruma is an RPG set in an original universe. The game lives in Discord, as a bot, and a full-stack web application goes with it.

The universe is not one person’s work: it is built with volunteers and a whole bunch of people who believe in the project. Coordinating their contributions is part of the job.

The tech

Everything is TypeScript: the bot with Discord.js, the API with NestJS, the website with SolidJS. Data lives in PostgreSQL, through Prisma, and the whole thing runs in Docker containers.

This is the project where I learned to deploy and maintain, on my own, an application with real users.

What I took away

  • A project with real users does not forgive careless releases.
  • Running a project also means listening to and organising the people who contribute.
